Well, I tell you there are not very many private run hostels around...
Due to the fact that there is a very strong section of YHA (International Youth Hostel Association) in Germany, in most touristic places economic chances for private run hostels aren't good. At some places you might even find small Hotels or Bed & Breakfast (Pension) that give some of there rooms away below YHA rates , especially if you are a group of two ore more! So I will try to provide a list with cheap stays here in the near future.

Did you know that some of the YHA-Hostels in Germany are situated in ancient castels or at very scenic spots? So sometimes even I stay at YHA for that reason. You should not look at the Dollar when you can have the chance to meet the the ghosts of ancient counts while vanishing through the walls of an old castle, just to get the spiritual feeling of ancient times in Germany...
